Dedicated to following the holy pretty girl guidelines set by a visionary re-imaginator of Frida Kahlo's work
Catching Elephant is a theme by Andy Taylor

Some quick notes for all you artists out there on my methodology for painting pretty girls. I get asked this a lot…..
I followed the instructions!!! Why didn’t it turn out well?! *sobs* I’ll never work at Pixar now!
Thanks to toonsketchbook’s incredibly insightful guide, I now know the REAL way to draw a purdy girl! Who knew I’ve been doing it wrong for years? My eyes are opened, truly.
Seriously, though, screw you man.
Gosh that looks really great you followed the tutorial exactly and look how well it turned out!!!! LIKE MAGIC
Guys slow down! All of this nasty hate mail in regards to my Frida Kahlo paint I did at the beginning of last year is unnecessary. It was intended as a prototypical gay commentary on cosmetic-industry imposed contemporary beauty standards. It’s intended to be tongue-in-cheek. That’s ridiculously transparent when reflecting upon the writing style I used. I love Frida Kahlo! Her art was strong, and evocative; her countenance comparitvely so! You can put the pitchforks and flaming torches down now.

nice try asshole
Okay so I know this is kinda taboo but anyways.
Vincent van Gogh: Not too easy on the eyes. I mean he’s got the ginger hair and the cut off ear thing going on. He didn’t know where to put his dick or what shade of coat would obviously suit his skin tone. Really, he’s a bit of a wreck. So this got me to thinking. What would have happened if his boyfriends had done the right thing and taken him to a beautician, (which clearly needed to happen)? I did a subtle re-paint over the top of his original self-portrait to “conceptualize” what it would have looked like if he had been whisked off to Beauty Works or the likes….I didn’t want to alter the integrity of the original painting too much. What do you reckon?

HAHAHAHAHA I HAVE ALWAYS HATED THIS GUY. This is the same artist who once took one of my fanarts (something from Aladdin I think) and painted over it without my permission, then had the gall to post a “side by side comparison” on his Facebook or something, with a caption that I had “munted Jasmine” (my fanart wasn’t good enough for him apparently) and with the general air that his paintover was obviously better. He also has painted over Frida Kahlo’s work in order to make her “prettier” and overall this guy is an appalling, sexist pig and I JUST CAN’T.
To be fair, I think this is fine as a guide for “how to draw a typical ultrastylized pin-up made-up white girl in the style of some types of Western animation” and there’s nothing wrong with choosing to stylize some of your female characters like this. Plenty of great artists (for example, loish) draw girls in a similar vein. It’s the way that this “guide” is presented and worded (“pretty girl recipe” lol) and EVERYTHING ABOUT IT REALLY that is just hilariously terrible. And judging by who the artist is - again, an appalling personality FOR REASONS BESIDES THIS “GUIDE” - I’m not surprised.
Andy won everything!

For the prettygirlinitiative
Initial reaction to the original. I was like thats freaky as hell. Couple of lines and highlights later BAM plastic robot.

Frida Kahlo: Not too easy on the eyes. I mean she’s got the lady-mo and the monobrow thing going on. She didn’t know where to put her blush or what shade lipstick would obviously suit her skin tone. Really, she’s a bit of a wreck. So this got me to thinking. What would have happened if her girlfriends had done the right thing and taken her to a beautician, (which clearly needed to happen)? Did you really just skin-lighten a Frida Kahlo self portait
and remove her facial hair
and call her “a wreck”
and then say she couldn’t choose a fucking lipstick to suit her skin tone
after you changed her skin tone
how can one person be everything that is wrong with the world at once
I don’t think she changed her skin tone but still.. ! What the fuck are you doing? Who cares about making her beautiful by western beauty industry standards. You’re going against everything that makes her really beautiful. Frida had a bunch of fucked up shit happen to her, unibrow and all. And she wore her facial hair with pride. It’s part of who she was and what made her a strong, proud, awesome woman and symbol of feminism. The fact that you consider her friends not taking her to a salon to ‘fix’ her ‘flaws’, wrong. Only serves to show how shallow you really are. You don’t have to buy in to the shit they sell you to be beautiful. And fuck you, photoshop pictures of yourself next time.
I beg to differ.
Removing the lowlights and expanding the midtones and highlights to cover previously dark areas in order to “even out” the skintone counts as “lightening”.
Here’s a half-and-half comparison to better see what was done here:
This is basically what most hydroquinone skin-bleaching creams are touted to do.
if you think that standard western beauty is the only issue here, you’re also wrong.
many many layers of stupid and colonizer mentality here.
I looked at 1 page of the op’s blog. many drawings, not 1 poc
op conceptualized a tan white woman is what he did.
and beauty is the only issue here? nope.
Wow this is disgusting. Wow. The initial commentary. Wow.

dude is such a hack. he forgot the monkey and the cat! well I fixed it. now everyone is “pretty” and this is acceptable now
